Electric Motor IP-INGRESS PROTECTION

IP (ingress protection) protection grade system is drafted by IEC (International Electrical Communication), which classifies electrical appliances according to their characteristics of dust and moisture prevention. IP protection level is composed of two numbers. The first number represents the level of dust prevention and foreign object intrusion prevention of electrical appliances (foreign objects including tools and human fingers are not allowed to touch the live parts in electrical appliances to avoid an electric shock). The second number represents the tightness of electrical appliances against moisture and water immersion. The larger the number, the higher the protection level.

The protection level is usually expressed by IP followed by two numbers, which are used to clarify the protection level.

The first digit indicates the range of dust resistance of the equipment, or the degree to which people are protected from hazards in a sealed environment. Represents the level of preventing the entry of solid foreign matters, and the highest level is 6.

The second digit indicates how waterproof the equipment is. Represents the level of water prevention, and the highest level is 8.

2	Prevent the intrusion of solid foreign objects with a diameter greater than 12.5mm	Prevent people's fingers from contacting the parts inside the electrical appliance and prevent the intrusion of foreign objects with medium size (diameter greater than 12.5mm)
3	Prevent the intrusion of solid foreign objects with a diameter greater than 2.5mm	Prevent tools, wires and similar small foreign objects with diameter or thickness greater than 2.5mm from invading and contacting the parts inside the electrical appliance
4	Prevent the intrusion of solid foreign objects with a diameter greater than 1.0mm	Prevent tools, wires and similar small foreign objects with diameter or thickness greater than 1.0mm from invading and contacting the parts inside the electrical appliance
5	Prevent foreign objects and dust	Completely prevent the invasion of foreign objects. Although it can not completely prevent the invasion of dust, the amount of dust will not affect the normal operation of electrical appliances
6	Prevent foreign objects and dust	Completely prevent the invasion of foreign objects and dust
Second digit after IP: Waterproof grade

1	Prevent water droplet immersion	Vertically falling water droplets (such as condensate) will not cause damage to electrical appliances
2	When tilted 15 degrees, water droplets can still be prevented from immersion	When the appliance is tilted from vertical to 15 degrees, dripping water will not cause damage to the appliance
3	Prevent spraying water from immersion	Protect against rain or damage caused by water sprayed in the direction with an included angle of less than 60 degrees from the vertical
4	Prevent splashing water from immersion	To prevent damage caused by water splashing in all directions
5	Prevent spray water from immersion	Prevent low-pressure water spray lasting at least 3 minutes
6	Prevent big wave immersion	Prevent heavy water spray lasting at least 3 minutes
7	Prevent water immersion during immersion	Prevent the effect of immersion for 30 minutes in water up to 1 meter deep
8	Prevent the immersion of water when sinking	Prevent the effect of continuous immersion in water with a depth of more than 1m.The exact conditions are specified by the manufacturer for each equipment

The common protection grades of motors are IP23, IP44, IP54, IP55, IP56 and IP65.

If the motor is used in underwater robots and dental equipment, the motor needs the protection grade of IP68;

The motor is used in household appliances and usually does not need any protection grade;

If the motor is used in industrial equipment, the protection grade of the motor needs to be IP44;
